Mag Checks: Bedside Reference

What to assess at each magnesium check — vitals, UOP, worsening PreX/HELLP sx, mag toxicity, DTR loss.

  • Vitals (including O2 sat) + UOP.
  • Worsening PreX / HELLP sx: headache, vision changes, N/V, RUQ pain.
  • Mag toxicity sx: somnolence, SOB / pulm edema, chest pain, RUQ pain.
  • Loss of DTRs — reflexes are first to go. Preeclamptic patients are baseline hyper-reflexic.
